2020 – A Year Like No Other

2020 is like no other year gone before.  In a normal year, EMS manufacturing can be challenging, but in 2020, it was particularly daunting. Whilst we have seen many challenges unfold, we have also witnessed many positives develop.

Dynamic EMS enable scale, scope and speed in electronic manufacturing services. They offer tailor-made, customised electronics manufacturing services to customers with complex, highly diversified businesses. From design to distribution, they enable their customers to be more competitive by bringing innovative solutions to market faster, with a commitment to quality in everything they do.

John Dignan and the management team at Dynamic EMS recently did their annual reflection and review, a group discussion examining the highlights and challenges of this amazing year. More than anything, they found that 2020 was the year that proved what they had known all along – that collaboration is key.

UK and global logistics

Long term, UK indigenous companies who manufacture in certain low-cost areas will review their manufacturing strategies and potentially revert back to the advantages that high-quality manufacturers bring in the UK.

When Lockdown hit – handling the essential work

Here at Dynamic EMS, we “leaned into” the situation and looked at how we continued to do business, protected our people and gained traction in the emerging markets/opportunities that the pandemic created. The global impact of COVID-19 continues to have unprecedented impact on the global economy and that of the UK. This has not only been seen in retail, construction and hospitality sectors, but also in the Electronics Manufacturing Sector – with levels of downturn across all sectors never seen in our generation. Dynamic EMS have combatted the impact of COVID-19 on our business, having already engaged with organisations that are involved in: blood analysis and disease detection, contamination monitoring & antibody diagnostic testing specifically for COVID-19. We also engaged with part of the UK ventilators challenge community, enabling Dynamic EMS to manufacture associated components under our ISO13485 accreditation for BAE systems.

Preparation and experience are everything

Dynamic EMS have been involved for many years with customers maintaining critical national infrastructure, clean water systems, wastewater treatment, utilities, fire prevention monitoring systems and the national grid. This work continued to be essential, if not even more so, during the pandemic.

Dynamic EMS are also suppliers to customers involved in high-security and communications products and services to sites of critical national infrastructure, including hospitals, prisons, airports, military sites, police and emergency services, ports, logistics centres, local and national government sites, city centre control rooms and alarm receiving centres. We have supplied an essential video surveillance system to a COVID-19 field hospital and provided networking transmission products to mobile Coronavirus testing stations run by healthcare organisations.

As the world strives to get businesses returning to work post pandemic, Dynamic EMS are at the front-end, manufacturing social distancing devices for all sectors. We were involved in the UK ventilator challenge supporting BAE systems, and some of our customer products supported the creation of new hospitals required in the fight against COVID-19.

The challenge of manufacturing operations – solved by a focus on our people

Firstly – we have a very loyal and stable workforce who accepted the challenge and realised that the manufacture of critical products would result in a societal impact in the fight against the pandemic. Having open dialogue and making necessary changes to the facility and our way of working in order to ensure our employees’ safety was a fundamental priority in our operations.

Lessons learned – is this the new normal?

With every crisis there emerge business opportunities. The pandemic has obviously resulted in the manufacture of PPE, for example. It has also seen the emergence of a virtual world, and to some degree a cashless world. We also saw the emergence of medical diagnostics, wearable diagnostics, etc. and design timescales that pre-pandemic would never have happened. As humans, we all like contact and interaction with each other, and we long for the time we all can embrace and shake hands with each other, that’s what humans do.

Regarding charity

Dynamic EMS have always taken its charity and social responsibilities seriously. We continue to donate to our chosen charities. With social distancing, we have had to refrain from Coffee Morning and similar fundraisers, but since we are all about solving challenges, we have found other ways of raising funds.

Looking ahead

Not to undermine the scale of the COVID-19 challenge, the EMS sector still has to bear the unknown impact of a new US President and of course Brexit. I think as we move into 2021, we will see some supply chain and component availability issues. We will also see significant opportunities emerge in the Medical, Security, Fintech, Smart Utilities markets as well as AI, and indeed the much talked about electric vehicle markets.
