23 Jun Women in Engineering Day #INWED21
We Hear from Dynamic EMS
Dynamic People Make EMS Dynamic
Now in its eighth year, International Women in Engineering Day, on 23 June, is the only day in the calendar that celebrates women in engineering and allied professions. It is coordinated from the UK by WES, which founded the event in 2014.
It’s a date that Dynamic EMS hold in their diary to ensure that they play their part in actively encouraging more women into their world of electronics manufacturing, by trying to paint an accurate picture to correct misaligned perceptions.
Meet Human Resources Manager, Victoria Bonnar who has made STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) a personal crusade, to make sure Dynamic EMS takes all of the necessary steps to ensure that a career in electronics manufacturing is an opportunity for all.
“Companies like Dynamic EMS and the media have a responsibility to promote the reality, that a career in electronic manufacturing is a career in art, design, and engineering. Essentially innovating the products for tomorrow, today. It’s this ‘packaging’ that we need to present, and to do this, we need to take STEM into the classroom.
There is an outdated view of electronics manufacturing in the UK, it’s far less labour intensive than it once was. We have invested significantly in Capital Equipment to streamline the manufacturing process, to make it more efficient and effective. In turn, we have upskilled our team. Positions opening in design, engineering, supply chain and operations, all require an understanding of the subjects that fall under the STEM umbrella.”
Meet Peter Birrell, Operations Director, who presents his unique viewpoint as a male in the electronics industry, who actively encourages females into the engineering and manufacturing environment.
“From an employer’s perspective, we would prefer to have a diverse engineering team. We recognise that engineering teams come up with the most innovative ideas if they are made up of even proportions of men and women. We’d also like to invite the next generation of women into manufacturing and engineering as we believe when females see other females leading, it provides a role model for others to follow.”
In Dynamic EMS, however, we are disappointed with the low level of female applications we receive for any engineering role we advertise. It’s our belief that the manufacturing and electronics industry isn’t perceived in an accurate way, to attract more females into the art behind innovation and technology. We’d like to do our part to encourage more students to visit our facility to learn more from a practical and true hands-on experience.”
Meet Sharon Fry, Materials Manager, with 20+ years’ experience in the electronics sector, Sharon believes it is one of her roles to champion women in technical, engineering and manufacturing roles, to continue to support the next generation of female talent. Sharon will openly communicate her continued committed to ensuring a diverse workforce and sees encouraging more women into engineering as vital, if we are to meet the skill needs in the UK, now and in the future.
“We are Dynamic People, operating in the dynamic world of material management. It’s fast paced and everchanging. There isn’t room for gender bias or disparity. The supply chain waits for no man, no woman – nobody!”
And our final word on the important subject of encouraging more women into manufacturing and engineering goes to the Managing Director of Dynamic EMS, meet John Dignan.
“From an employer’s perspective, we would prefer to have a diverse engineering team. We’d like to invite the next generation of women into manufacturing and engineering as we believe when females see other females leading, it provides a role model for others to follow.
So, our ‘Dynamic People’ will continue to ensure that we promote engineering and manufacturing and as we grow, we’d like to play our part in attracting more women into our world.”
